Achalasia is a rare disease that decreases the quality of life of patients, and failure to treat it in a timely manner may lead to serious consequences such as repeated infections of the lung and even esophageal cancer.
The first important and cited studies about achalasia disease in Iran were conducted and published by the researchers of the GI diseases research center affiliated to Digestive Diseases Research Institute of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, with the supervision of Dr Reza Malekzadeh.
Currently, the achalasia research group affiliated to Digestive Diseases Research Institute of Tehran University of Medical Sciences has focused its research activities on this field with the responsibility of Dr Michaeli (the professor of Tehran University of Medical Sciences and the faculty member of the research institute) and his colleagues.
In total, over the past decade, the GI diseases research center of this institute has made ongoing efforts for timely diagnosis and treatment of achalasia disease; for example by establishing the achalasia disease registration system, in addition to identifying people with this rare disease in the country, the establishment of a database and 10-year caring for preventing the exacerbation of the disease and contributing to the completion of their treatment process, it has contributed to the production of knowledge in this field and the promotion of achalasia treatment.
So far, numerous articles have been published from a number of important researches of GI diseases research center in credible domestic and international journals.
