Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) include a large number of functional disorders that can affect all parts of the GI system, leading to increased visceral sensation and gastrointestinal motility disorders.
The most common disorders in this group of diseases include irritable bowel syndrome, chronic constipation, and dyspepsia without ulcer, which are among the most common digestive disorders in Iran.
Although these diseases are not fatal, they can cause many diseases due to their high prevalence, reduced quality of life and increased cost of treatment.
Nearly 20% of all patients with GI diseases referring to gastrointestinal and liver outpatient clinics in Iran are affected by functional gastrointestinal disorders, and it is one of the common reasons for endoscopy and colonoscopy.
Several studies on the prevalence and effective treatment of these diseases have been carried out by researchers at the GI diseases research center of Digestive Diseases Research Institute of Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
The aim of the Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders Research Group of Digestive Diseases Research Institute of Tehran University of Medical Sciences is to promote the recognition of functional disorders of gastrointestinal diseases, optimize the clinical management for these patients, develop and provide educational resources to improve the quality of life of people suffering from functional gastrointestinal disorders, and inform, help and support them.
