The prevalence of GERD (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease) has increased dramatically in many parts of the world including Iran during past years.
Currently, reflux diseases are the most common cause of referral to general practitioners, internists, and gastroenterologists due to upper gastrointestinal complaints; so that in gastroenterology subspecialized clinics, about one-third of patients suffer from this disease. Also, in Iran, more than 70% of upper GI endoscopies are performed every day because of reflux disease symptoms. Although reflux is not a dangerous disease, it is really annoying and can significantly affect the patient's quality of life.
Reflux Research Group at Digestive Diseases Research Institute of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, during the two decades of activity, has benefited from cooperation of very enthusiastic and talented medical students, residents and physicians.
With the efforts of this group, several studies have been conducted about the epidemiology, prevalence, clinical symptoms and treatment of this disease. Additionally, the cohort study of reflux disease has been conducted on a sample of 1000 patients since 1386 in the GI diseases research center of Digestive Diseases Research Institute of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, and research on this disease continues in this research institute.
